Jan Fisher studied Fine Art (painting) at Coventry College of Art and did a post graduate in Art Education in Newcastle.
Jan taught art in schools in Bristol and lectured at the West of England College of Art. She also worked as a free-lance designer/painter doing interesting commissioned works in public places, and exhibiting her paintings in major exhibitions.
In 1973 Jan married artist John Fisher and they moved to the Scottish Highlands, working as hostel wardens for the SYHA which gave them the opportunity to live in beautiful, often remote areas, and continue painting. Jan walked the hills and glens with a sketchbook exploring ways of depicting the beauty, the light and the drama of the Scottish landscape. The Isle of Mull and Iona were a particularly favoured location, during their three years living in Tobermory, raising a young family and frequently re-visited since leaving, to live for a year on the banks of the Crinan Canal.
In 2000 they moved to Pittenweem in Fife and opened the Fisher Studio and Gallery, exhibiting work by mainly Scottish artists and craftworkers. Many of Jan’s paintings now feature the big skies and seascapes over the Firth of Forth, the fascinating rock formations along the beaches and the historic villages of the East Neuk. During one of their frequent trips west they went to St Kilda, a wonderful experience for any creative person!
The Gallery closed after 21 happy years, and was sold during lockdown, affording time to tend the garden at their new Pittenweem house, visit friends and continue painting at a more leisurely pace.
“When the chance came to have an exhibition at Tin Shed Gallery, back on our beloved Mull, I didn’t hesitate to say YES”.
